Roel is born on April 27th, 1976 in Hasselt, Belgium. When not travelling around the world, Roel is living partly in Zonhoven in Belgium and partly in Rasun Anterselva in Italy.
In 1993 Roel buys his first mountain bike and soon he is taking part in a few races and celebrates his first victories. In 1994 Roel joins the mountain bike club of the local bike-shop Ghislain Cycles. The owner Ghislain will become his first sponsor and devoted helper.
