In het cultureel centrum van Diest zijn de Granny Awards 2009 uitgereikt. Per categorie werden de laureaten van de “mountainbiker van het jaar” gehuldigd. Er vielen geen verrassingen te noteren. Renners en rensters die dit jaar zowel op internationaal als op nationaal niveau hoge toppen scheerden, werden verkozen.
In een stijlvolle show gepresenteerd door Maarten(Paulissen) & Maarten(Gybels) wachtte iedereen in spanning de uitslag van de verkiezing af. Er werd een onderscheid gemaakt tussen internationale en nationale prestaties.
In de categorie “Internationaal elite heren” haalde Roel Paulissen het voor de Nederlanders Rudi Van Houts en Bas Peters. In een categorie die gedomineerd werd door onze Noorderburen is de award voor Paulissen dubbel en dik verdiend na zijn tweede wereldtitel marathon. Ook in de andere internationale wedstrijden was de Cannondalebiker regelmatig. Een logische overwinning dus. De tweede plaats voor Van Houts is zeker een opsteker voor de Meridabiker. Hij moet het Nederlands mountainbiken een nieuw elan geven.
Bij de “internationale” elite vrouwen was het lang een nek aan nek race tussen Laura Turpijn en Githa Michiels in de polls. Beide vrouwen zetten mooie resultaten neer in de wereldbekers en ook op het WK. Uiteindelijk haalde Turpijn het voor Michiels en Monique Zeldenrust.
Ook bij de beloften elite heren werd internationaal een award uitgereikt. Daar was het Irjan Luttenberg die met de award mocht pronken. Grote belofte Sebastien Carabin moest vrede nemen met de tweede plaats. Henk Jaap Moorlag mocht mee op het podium.
Dan was de beurt aan de laureaten op nationaal niveau. Bij de elite heren werd Jimmy Tielens een logische laureaat. De Saecorenner won dit seizoen zowel de Flanders- als de Beneluxcup. Een bijzonder mooi resultaat,dat terecht gewaardeerd werd. Nicolas Vermeulen, Belgisch kampioen marathon, en Kevin Van Hoovels werden de nummers twee en drie.
Bij de elite vrouwen ging de award naar Belgisch kampioene Kristien Nelen. Joyce Vanderbeken en Sanne Cant deelden samen met haar het podium. Bij de nieuwelingen was het te verwachten dat een Jens met de hoogste eer ging lopen. Welke Jens was nog afwachten. Het werd uiteindelijk Jens Vandekinderen die Jens Schuermans versloeg. Zoals het vaak het geval was dit seizoen. Laurens Sweeck was een logische derde.
Belgisch kampioen Jeff Luyten stond vaak op het hoogste schavotje bij de junioren. Dat was ook in Diest het geval. Bart De Vocht en Ruben Scheire kregen de zilveren en bronzen award.
Bij de dames jeugd was Elise Marchal de revelatie van het jaar. Ze presteerde knap nationaal én internationaal. Een verdiende award dus voor haar. Steffi Derveaux strandde op de tweede plaats en Claudia Claesen werd derde.
De jongsten bij de jeugd werden niet vergeten. Bij de aspiranten 12-jarigen vond de publieksjury Arnaud Beeckman de beste voor Jasper Knaeps en Niels Dervaux. Gianni Van Doninck beheerste dit jaar de Kids Challenge bij de 13-jarigen en dat werd beloond. Hij haalde voor Scott Seykens en Nick Vanpol. Bij de 14-jarigen vond men Remy Mertz de beste voor Augustin Bruyr en Mathieu Dehaeze.
Beneluxkampioen Gerrit Delfosse won bij de masters 1 voor Peter Verstraete en Telly Parys. Ook hier een logische uitslag die de sterkste van het seizoen beloond. Bij de masters 2 kregen we dit jaar heel spannende wedstrijden te zien. Patrik Wellens, winnaar van de Beneluxcup, mocht de trofee mee naar huis nemen naar buurgemeente Tessenderlo nemen. Ronny Geerts(tweede) en Erik Evers(derde)beklommen eveneens het podium.
Roel Paulissen: “De mooiste medailles zijn natuurlijk de twee gouden als wereldkampioen marathon. Zeker als je ze twee keer na mekaar haalt. Daar ben ik bijzonder fier op. Misschien kan ik volgend jaar voor de derde keer winnen. Het volgende doel is de Spelen halen. Daarvoor moeten we volgend seizoen zo veel mogelijk punten halen. Zodat we minimum met twee, misschien wel drie renners kunnen gaan. Momenteel kan er maar één biker naar de Spelen gaan. In de wereldbeker wil ik op het podium staan. Makkelijk is dat niet. De circuits zijn veranderd. Alles is sneller en technischer. Dat is één van de dingen waar ik de volgende jaren wil aan werken. Ik zit nu al bijna twee decennia in de sport. Toen ik begon, waren de wedstrijden langer. Nu zijn ze korter geworden met tot 1uur en een kwartier wedstrijd. Nino Schurter, de huidige wereldkampioen en die generatie opkomende talenten hebben daar voordeel mee.” Paulissen rijdt al enkele jaren voor Cannondale. “In andere teams zijn het vaak ingenieurs die de fietsen ontwikkelen en daar moet je het dan mee doen. Het voordeel bij Cannondale is dat ze luisteren naar de renners en daar rekening mee houden. Als je technisch aangelegd bent, is dat plezant om samen te werken. Dit jaar heb ik bij de ontwikkeling van de nieuwe hardtail goed mogen meewerken. Er heerst een goede sfeer in het team en dat bevordert zeker de prestaties. Over het gewicht van de fiets wordt druk gediscuteerd. Sommigen zeggen dat die grenss hetzelfde is als op de weg: 6,8 kg. Anderen zeggen dat alles vrij is. Misschien halen we binnen een paar jaar wel die magische grens,”besluit de wereldkampioen marathon.
